Try A Walking Safari To Get Closer To The Animals

Walking safari projects make a fascinating change from the standard safari where you are riding around on motor power. Whether you are a newcomer to the entire world of safaris, or whether you have been able to explore Africa many times using traditional motor power, you will find that being on foot allows you to get something extra out of your experience. You can choose a foot safari in South Africa, where you will be virtually guaranteed to see the large wild animals which attract so many to the region, or you can try the east of the continent, where a varied terrain and diverse ecosystem awaits you.

Walking safaris in South Africa are ideal for those just starting out with safaris, provided of course that you are fit enough to handle the terrain and the itinerary. If you want to see wild animals close up, walking will allow you to get significantly closer than you would be able to do in a motor vehicle. The only serious alternative is to go on horseback, as horses do elicit trust from animals far more than vehicles do. You would also be in a higher position than you will be when walking, which may be a significant advantage.

If you have already experienced the Kruger park and the best that South Africa has to offer, you can look to the east for further fresh experiences. The Kenya and Tanzania safari packages offer an unequaled variety of terrain and habitat, which are home to a huge diversity of life forms. Walking through the jungle can be tiring, but walking along a savannah like plain with no shelter can actually feel far more tiring. If you are going to attempt this, you would be well advised to do most of your walking in the early morning or late at night.

Of course the major concern with a walking safari is always going to be safety. As you have no vehicle to hide in should an animal suddenly decide to attack. For this reason, it is inadvisable for anyone to choose such a safari for their first ever visit to Africa, but if you do then you must make sure that you travel with an experienced guide. This is no time for taking chances or trying to show excessive bravery. If in doubt, don't venture out.

It is always important that a safari is planned properly, but this is never more so than in the case of a walking safari. Your clothing will be exposed to the elements far more often and for much longer periods of time, and you will be more vulnerable to insect bites. Make sure that you carry the strongest insect repellent you can find, as insect bites are the one thing which can totally ruin your trip. Use an established tour operator to book your walking safari.
